Overhead Transmission Lines Being Taken Down in the UK

Large power poles which have blighted a beautiful section of England’s country side are being taken down and replaced with underground cable, according to an article in the Lancashire Telegraph. Strikingly, the money for this change is coming from Electricity North West, which is the operator of the electricity grid in North West England. (The equivalent of Alberta’s AESO).

About the investment, a spokesman for Electricity North West said, “Gisburn Forest is one of the region’s most attractive parklands, drawing thousands of visitors every year. Our project to remove the electricity poles and overhead cables will dramatically improve the local landscape and allow the area’s natural beauty to be restored, while still providing electricity to customers nearby through underground cables.”

This is part of a large and ongoing effort to restore the beauty of England’s countryside by putting unsightly power lines underground. If only our own electrical system operator here in Alberta was as willing as their British counterpart to take the needs and aspirations of the community into account.
