Overhead Power Lines Taken Out by Snow

A huge snowstorm blanketed Edmonton and area with up to 30cm of wet snow on April 5. As happens whenever we have these kinds of storms, heavy wet snow causes overhead power lines to buckle or trees to fall over onto power lines. About 30,000 EPCOR customers were without power at the height of the outage (Edmonton Journal). Power outages are not only inconvenient, but they also result in thousands of hours of lost labour productivity.

If power lines were buried, these repeated outages would not occur, and millions of dollars in subsequent repairs and lost productivity would be saved.
